Innovator of the Week: Prince

The following post was written by Prince, Special Olympics youth leader from Zimbabwe. Prince makes it his mission to strengthen inclusion in his community. Check out how he #innovateforinclusion!

The project was a great opportunity to raise awareness in my community and made me see the world in a different light. It was heartening to see the smiles and tears of joy from the teachers, caregivers, and members of staff present. On the day of the event, we reached our main goal of spreading awareness about Special Olympics and promoting inclusion through song and dance. The idea was to create a fun project that would attract a lot of youth and urge them to get involved. The project proved to all that disability or not, we can all sing and dance to the same kind of music.

This project made me interact with different sorts of people from sponsors and service providers to participants and coaches. The talent show was an opportunity to think outside the box and see life from a different perspective. During the event, we received good responses from almost everyone who came. We wanted to reward and motivate all the participants, which we felt we were successful at. The participants who came in first, second, and third place were given key chains and wristbands. Participants who came in fourth to eighth place were given participation ribbons.

We want to acknowledge the awesome team work from our supporting staff from Special Olympics Zimbabwe and the volunteers who made this project a success. They helped us with the planning, necessary errands, and running of the event. We are happy to have achieved our main goal, which was to help break the social barriers of discrimination and stigma towards individuals with intellectual disabilities.
