Innovators of the Week: Danny and Sadaq

The following post was written by Danny and Sadaq, two Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Kenya. The pair make it their mission to strengthen inclusion in their community. Check out how they #innovateforinclusion!

The Special Olympics Kenya Social Media Campaign planning was done with the help of the Special Olympics Kenya office. We took part in various activities that involved inclusion. One of the activities was Unified football, a project where athletes with intellectual disabilities play with their peers without intellectual disabilities. We took part in their training and the competition as their event photographer. We felt great taking photographs and videos for the Unified soccer project as we felt they believed in us and appreciated our effort.

We also took part in the inclusive cycling project as their project photographers. The project included athletes with intellectual disabilities cycling with their siblings without intellectual disabilities to promote inclusion and acceptance in their families. Parents and caregivers also enjoyed competing against their children.

Apart from taking photographs we also took part in the competition to socialize and have fun. According to the cyclists, it is an exciting sport that tones muscles and strengthens cardiovascular systems.

Through these projects we have improved our photography and videography skills and we learned that a Unified world is all we need. We are grateful to Special Olympics for coming up with such initiatives and Special Olympics Kenya for supporting and believing in us.

Danny Luhila is a Special Olympics Kenya athlete with intellectual disabilities who is studying Film Production and also utilizing his skills to create awareness about persons with intellectual disabilities through social media.
