A Recipe for Inclusion

Fatima and Amanda are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from El Salvador who will lead a Youth Innovation Project promoting healthy lifestyles and proper nutrition by holding culinary workshops with professional chefs and nutritionists. Individuals with intellectual disabilities along with their families and friends will all come together to learn culinary skills and information about healthy living that the can share with others and use throughout their life.

Over the course of 12 months, Fatima and Amanda will hold workshops for 40 participants with and without intellectual disabilities, but their message of inclusion and healthy living will reach 13,500 more people through social media. Fatima and Amanda recognize that proper nutrition is essential for athletes and want to give Special Olympics athletes the tools and knowledge they need to exceed in their sport of choice. It is said that a way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, but Fatima and Amanda are showing that food can also be an avenue for inclusion, growing the Unified Generation one meal at a time.
