Expanding Employment Opportunities in Guam
Megan and Kane are Special Olympics Youth Leaders from Guam working on a Youth Innovation Project to develop a blog and a vlog for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Motivated by the lack of employment opportunities for individuals with ID in their area, Megan and Kane want to connect individuals with ID to local employers. The pair intends for this website to be a platform to discuss topics regarding individuals with ID and the current employment landscape. Once established, Megan and Kane plan to develop site tours and vocational training for individuals with ID, their families, and their employers. By providing individuals with ID the opportunity to connect with others in their community, Megan and Kane are leading their Unified Generation by creating a more inclusive culture.
Over the course of a year, Megan and Kane will work with website developers to create a user-friendly online platform that is easily accessible by all members of their community. The pair will work with individuals with ID, their families, and potential employers to determine what topics and features will best meet their needs. By supporting their website with in-person training, Megan and Kane are actively engaging individuals with ID in their community and increasing their success in their new position. Megan and Kane’s Youth Innovation Project will not only empower individuals with ID by providing them employment opportunities, but it will also develop a better understanding of ID in their community by giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their unique talents.
