Uniting Schools in India
Mahi and Rithik are Special Olympics Youth Leaders in India who are leading a project in Delhi to grow the Unified School initiative by creating joint Unified Sport opportunities between mainstream schools and schools for students with intellectual disabilities. In September 2018, Mahi and Rithik participated in the Special Olympics Global Youth Leadership Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan and learned how to enhance the impact of their youth leadership and establish a plan to execute their project back home in Delhi.
At the Forum in Baku, Mahi and Rithik learned about the Unified Schools initiative and the opportunities it creates for students with and without intellectual disabilities. They were inspired to create these same opportunities in the schools in their communities. In order to engage local schools as Unified Schools, Mahi and Rithik plan to host two Unified Sport activities per year, open to students with and without intellectual disabilities. During this project, Mahi and Rithik will target four schools to begin Unified Sports, focusing on a different school each month. Later in the project, all four schools will come together for a large event focused on inclusion and unity.
Mahi and Rithik are committed to growing inclusion in their local schools by creating opportunities for everyone with and without intellectual disability to come together in sport and other activities. Through their leadership, work, and collaboration with Special Olympics, Mahi and Rithik are growing the Unified Generation in India and beyond.
